MS Office Project Portfolio Server is an interesting, if somewhat niche, product. It provides a level of abstraction above the Ms Project Server that can be used for reporting, planning, and forecasting purposes. I’ve worked with it on only a few occasions, so take my observations with a very well intentioned grain of salt. Installation of the system is simple if you are only using one MS Project server. It becomes something of a Kafkaesque nightmare when deployed with multiple Project Servers across domains. Since it is an enterprise level forecasting tool, I have to imagine the multiple server deployment isn’t uncommon, even if it isn’t fun. Training materials for the administration and use of the server are sparse. If you have a strong background in MS Project and Project Management, you can figure it out with a little trial and error.
