HATFIELD TWP. — First it was Elm Terrace Hospital. Then it was North Penn Hospital. Next, Central Montgomery Medical Center. Now, it is Lansdale Hospital — or Abington Health Lansdale Hospital, to be exact. With the acquisition and name change comes a new CEO and the closing of the maternity ward and obstetrical unit on Feb. 1, 2009. On Oct. 31, nonprofit Abington Memorial Hospital finalized its acquisition and renaming of Central Montgomery Medical Center from for-profit Universal Health Services. The amount of the sale was not disclosed. The last recorded sale was in 2001, when the 72-acre, $38 million-assessed facility was sold to North Penn Hospital LLC for $12.4 million, according to Montgomery County records. UHS receives the proceeds of the sale and must pay taxes to Hatfield Township. Lansdale Hospital will not pay taxes to Hatfield, but will make “payments in lieu of taxes” to cover the use of township services, such as police and fire protection.
