Who handles yard waste disposal in New Hanover County?
It’s pretty much up to yard debris owners to decide how to dispose of the material, says Lynn Bestul, New Hanover County solid waste planner. Most methods cost money. “Yard debris is not allowed to go into the landfills, which means the garbage companies will have to go through with an additional truck, which means they will charge a fee,” Bestul says. Donnie Reynolds of Waste Industries, Inc., which serves areas of New Hanover County, says it would probably not be cost effective for owners of yard debris to have the material hauled unless a sizable quantity was involved. More than 50 garbage bags full of debris could fit into a 15-foot open container of the type used by Waste Industries. “It would have to be a pretty considerable amount for us to dispose of it for them,” Reynolds says. “They put a ban on it in the landfill and the landfill will not accept it so we don’t do it commercially.
