Answer Actually during their reign Spain was still divided into 2 kingdoms. Castilia and Catalunya. Ferdinand was ruling king of one of them and Isabella ruling queen of the other. Isabella of Castilia (Castile) and Ferdinand of Catalunya. Formally the countries were united just by the fact that the 2 rulers were married to each other. However, since the rulers were execising a rather total rule in their kingdoms in practical terms the union was quite real. But formally it did not take place until the next generation. I think that it is safe to say that Ferdinand – though religious – was less of a fanatic than Isabella and more of a practical pragmatic person. In my opinion Isabella showed many signs of being an intolerant religious fanatic – a kind of Christian Taliban. And I think that some measures were actually mostly initiated by her due to her personality.
