Andy Pettitte pitched effectively with three days rest and Hideki Matsui was the hitting star as the New York Yankees defeat the Philadelphia Phillies 7-3 Wednesday night to win the 2009 World Series four games to two. Pettitte gets the win by pitching into the sixth inning, allowing three runs. Matsui was the big bat driving in six of the seven runs the Yanks scored in the game. New York wins its 27th World Series title but its first since the 2000 season. Matsui was also named the World Series MVP while Pettitte won a clinching game of a postseason series for the sixth time. The Yankees chased starter and loser Pedro Martinez early as they took a 2-0 lead they would never relinquish. The Yankees finished off Martinez and built a 7-1 lead before Ryan Howard hit a two run homer off Pettitte but the New York bullpen saved the day for the winners.
