Who gets the salvage value, the customer or the dealer?
Since the inception of the CARS program the question has been asked: “Who gets the salvage value of the vehicle, the customer or the dealer? ” We know, and NHTSA has told us in the rules, that the salvage value of the vehicle must be disclosed to the consumer on the summary of sale form. The rules however are unfortunately silent as to who gets the salvage value. After discussion and a presentation by NADA and NHTSA, we believe that reimbursement of the salvage value of the vehicle is left to be decided between the customer and dealer in the negotiation process of the sale.
