Who gets spider and varicose veins?
Anyone, male or female, can develop spider or varicose veins. The tendency toward vein problems can be genetic and often runs in families. Hormonal changes that occur during pregnancy and menopause as well as taking estrogen, progesterone and birth control pills can also be factors in developing spider and varicose veins. Women often develop problem veins during pregnancy due to increases in hormonal levels as well as the increase in blood volume. The enlarged uterus can also put pressure on the veins. Varicose veins should resolve within 3-6 months after delivery. Varicose veins that remain longer than 6 months after pregnancy have sustained valve damage. Other factors that can result in spider and varicose veins include aging, obesity, prolonged standing, lack of exercise or injury to the leg (trauma).
