Who gets otitis media with effusion?
Otitis media with effusion is a relatively common condition. More than 7 in 10 children have an episode of otitis media with effusion by the time they are four. Although people of any age can develop otitis media with effusion, it is most common in children under the age of eight. Otitis media with effusion tends to affect children more often than adults because a child’s Eustachian tube is smaller and more horizontal. This makes it easier for the tube to become blocked. Boys are more likely to be affected by glue-ear than girls.
