Who Gave the Ten Commandments?
The Ten Commandmentsincluding the Sabbath-day requirementhave been in existence since mankind was created. God was simply reminding the people of this important fact. Next, we come to God’s codifying of the Ten Commandments for His nation of Israel. This was truly an awesome occasion. Thunder roared. Lightning flashed. And the earth SHOOK with the power of the Creator. Then God Himselfnot Mosesspoke the Ten Commandments! (Exodus 20:1). Many think that God the Father gave these commands and that Jesus Christ later came along and did away with them. But Jesus told the Jews that they had “neither heard [the Father’s] voice at any time, nor seen His form” (John 5:37). So just who was this God with Israel in the Sinai wilderness? He was often called the “Rock” of Israel (Deuteronomy 32:4, 15, 31; Psalm 18:2, 31, 46, etc.). In the New Testament, the Apostle Paul was inspired to write about Him.
