Indian National Congress (INC) is also known as the Congress Party or Congress (I). It is and has been since independence a major political party in India. It was founded by three people namely A. O. Hume, Dadabhai Naoroji and Sir Dinshaw Edulji Wacha in the year 1885. INC was a leader in India’s strive for Independence. A huge mass of 70 million people took part in the struggle to uproot the British Empire. Finally India achieved its independence in 1947. since then INC has been a major political party in India. INC had many great leaders over a period of time. Some names worth mentioning are Mahatma Gandhi, Netaji Subash Chandra Bose, Jawahar Lal Nehru, Indira Gandhi, and Rajiv Gandhi. The name Congress -I came into being during the period when Indira Gandhi was the prime minister, the letter I stands for Indira.
