The French were soon to learn that this was not to be so. After fighting the Japanese during ww2 with no help from the french the Vientnamese wanted to be free of colonial governments and power. After beating the french in 1954 Vietnam was split into North and South Vietnam. Ho chi Mhin wanted a united Vietnam and in doing so he needed the backing of a military power and that came under the flag of communism.
