Who forms a basic family unit in Tasmania?
Like many western countries, Tasmanian households are based on the ‘nuclear family’, that is, parents and children. Only a low percentage of households are extended (i.e. grandparents or other relatives live in the same household). There are a significant number of single-parent households, and divorces occur at a rate of about 3.0 per 1000 Tasmanians. These are less frequent than in many western countries (e.g. the USA).
