Rome won the Punic Wars, and they did last for decades, but it wasn’t because of the powerful Carthaginian Navy. The Romans defeated Carthage’s navy easily by using a very unorthodox tactic. Since the Romans were not skilled sailors, they would simply crash their ship into an enemy ship. They then boarded the enemy ship and slaughtered the sailors, who were not usually good fighters, in hand to hand combat. The reason that the Punic Wars were actually so drawn out was that Carthage was lead by a military genius, Hannibal. He led his army through Spain and over the Alps and marched on the Italian Peninsula from the North. The Romans would not fight him head to head, so he traveled the area for seven years, wreaking havoc where ever he went. Eventually, the Romans decided to attack Carthage.
