The Phams are the fifth family to own Casa Genotta and the first residents to offer the home as a cottage rental. Of historical interest, the O’Neills sold the house and most of their furniture to Mr. and Mrs. George Alfred Cluett, who first experienced the hospitality of the golden isles during the height of the Great Depression. Traveling south in search of a place of residence, the Cluetts were stranded without train fare in neighboring Brunswick due to President Roosevelt’s enactment of the Emergency Banking Act. Only knowing Mr. Cluett through his reputation as the owner of the successful “Arrow shirts” business, The Sea Island Company issued the couple credit that was recognized throughout the local community, which was also suffering from the unavailability of cash.
