Who does Chinas One Child Policy apply to?
The one child policy was set up to stop the tradition of having 5-10 children per family. If it had gone on unchecked, they would be looking at almost 1/2 billion more people today. The policy stands at 1 child per family in urban area’s and 2-3 children in rural area’s. Some religious and ethnic groups are exempt from the rules, but that is rare. The rich are more prone to circumvent the rule by paying the huge fines. Those fines are based on income. China has no intention of relaxing the rule. Interestingly, USA’s population growth, percentage wise is only slightly more then China. The one to look out for is India, that has almost unchecked population growth who’s population is only 200 million less then China. EDIT China has outlawed the use of sonograms to determine a baby’s sex. In comparing natural gender selection as opposed to unnatural, the difference between the world wide norm and China is not nearly as significant as some assume. Link is provided below. .
