Who do you believe was the best Governor of Pennsylvania during the 20th Century?
From my studies, I believe William Scranton (1963-1967) was the best governor of Pennsylvania in the 20th century. Elected as a Republican to the US Congress in 1960, Scranton was a moderate who supported President Kennedy’s Civil Rights Program and the establishment of the Peace Corps. In Congress, the freshman earned the nickname of the ‘Kennedy Republican.’ In 1962, Scranton was elected Governor. As Governor, he signed into law sweeping reforms in the state’s education system including creation of the state community college system, the state board of education, and the state Higher Education Assistance Agency. Furthermore, he created a program designed to promote the state in national and international markets and to increase the attractiveness of the state’s prouducts and services. As the 1964 Republican Presidential convention loomed, Scranton was seen as an attractive alternative to Conservative Senator Barry Goldwater.
