Who do I contact about noisy neighbours or noise nuisance?
The environmental health service receives several hundred requests each year to assist people who are suffering noise nuisance from sources of noise. The requests frequently deal with a range of different noise sources, including noisy neighbours, noisy factories and shops, barking dogs and burglar alarms. Part of any investigation carried out by the environmental health service will include site visits by officers in an attempt to witness the statutory nuisance whilst it is occurring. As the nuisance often occurs late at night, visits by officers out of office hours can be made by prior arrangement. If the officers are satisfied that a noise nuisance is occurring or is likely to recur, they are able to use the powers provided within the Environmental Protection Act 1990 in order to stop any nuisance. Alternatively, the service can install equipment which can be placed in the complainants property to allow the noise nuisance to be accurately recorded by the complainant and assessed by
