Who Discovered Mauna Loa?
Mauna Loa is considered the most massive mountain on earth. It occupies an area of 10,000 cubic miles. Mauna Loa, also the largest volcano on earth, is one of five volcanoes that formed the Big Island of Hawaii. Mauna Loa continues to add land mass to the largest island of the Hawaiian Archipelago, the longest and most isolated island group on earth, according to the National Park Service U.S. Department of the Interior. Since Mauna Loa makes up the bulk of Hawaii Island’s 4,030 square miles, its discovery is simultaneous to the discovery of Hawaii itself. The discovery of Mauna Loa technically cannot be attributed to only one person.
