Charles Babbage began dating Georgiana Whitmore while he was attending Cambridge University. They married on July 25, 1814, despite Babbage’s father’s disapproval. Benjamin, the elder Babbage, was a banker who believed his son should establish himself financially before getting married. Charles, then 23, and Georgiana, 22, ignored his advice. They eloped to Teignmouth, Devon, where they married at St. Michael’s Church.
