Who Developed the Volkswagen Beetle?
The Volkswagen Beetle was engineered and designed by Ferdinand Porsche, father of the Porsche sports car, at the behest of German Chancellor Adolf Hitler. The Nazi leader wanted an affordable, mass-produced passenger car for the average German, similar to what Henry Ford accomplished for Americans with the Model T. Porsche designed the Type 60 Volkswagen, or “people’s car.” Today’s Beetle still possesses many of its styling elements.
