The idea for the MA arose from both individuals involved in the ecosystem-related conventions and scientific experts. Each of the ecosystem-related conventions has significant needs for assessment information related to condition, economic value, threats, and trends in biodiversity and ecosystems and parties to the conventions have explored various means of obtaining this information. . Similarly, scientific experts have recognized the need for a mechanism to provide decision-makers with up-to-date information on scientific findings related to ecosystems and the biodiversity they contain.
