Who determines what materials (titles) have proficiency correlations? If librarians wish to enhance their records to include proficiency correlations, how should they start?
Classroom teachers and others who are working directly with students, particularly those involved in intervention, are the best judges of whether an item is effective in enhancing a student’s mastery of a proficiency objective. Therefore, librarians who have the responsibility of entering the proficiency/curriculum correlation into the MARC record need to work with teachers to identify such materials. If librarians are not asked by teachers for assistance in obtaining/identifying materials, they should approach teachers to see if they would like assistance. If the teacher indicates he/she already has the materials needed, the librarian needs to work with that teacher in a way that will elicit the teacher’s cooperation in allowing the librarian to catalog the material, if it is not already in the catalog, and to identify the specific objectives the material addresses.
