Christopher Latham Sholes designed the qwerty keyboard layout for his typewriter company, Sholes and Glidden in 1874. The layout is said to have been created to maximize speed of typing through minimizing typebar entanglement. Though we no longer have to worry about such an issue, the layout remains popular as nothing has been created that shows significant improvement upon this standard.
