Who Designed The Brighton Pavilion?
The Brighton Pavilion was designed by the Regency architect John Nash (1752 – 1835). Nash was the son of a millwright, but rose to become an architect and was then fortunate enough to acquire, as his sponsor, the Prince Regent (later to become King George lV). The Prince Regent asked Nash to re-design a villa which was already sited in Brighton and to turn it into a palace. The Prince Regent was very fond of Brighton and had turned it into a very fashionable area, through his royal patronage. Nash completed the work in 1815 and the style of the Pavilion is somewhat eclectic, being inspired by the Moghul palaces in India, which made it stand out against the other buildings in its locality. Nash also began work on re-designing Buckingham Palace, whilst it was still known as Buckingham House, but due to his work being so slow and the fact that he kept dismantling what he had done, the Prince Regent died before any works were completed and Nash was dismissed from the project.
