CMM, the predecessor model of CMMI, was defined by the Software Engineering Institute (SEI) in the early 90s. The initial ideas were produced as contract work for the U.S. Department of Defense, but quickly, the software industry began to take interest and supported this work. The first version of the improved model CMMI was made available im 2000.
