Who decided what days mother day, father day, easter etc.?
Here’s an extract from a book I have: “Easter Sunday is the Sunday following the first full moon of Spring, known as the Paschal Full Moon (PFM). In June AD 325, astronomers approximated astronomical full moon dates for the Christian church, calling them Ecclesiastical Full Moon (EFM) dates. From AD 326 the PFM date has always been the EFM date after 20th March (which was the equinox date in AD 325). According to this calculation, the earliest possible date for Easter is 22nd March and the latest is April. The following table gives the dates for Easter for the next 10 years: 2008 – 23 March 2009 – 12 April 2010 – 4 April 2011 – 24 April 2012 – 8 April 2013 – 31 March 2014 – 20 April” Lent starts on a Wednesday 40 days before Easter so depends on the date of Easter that year. Mothering Sunday in the UK is always the 4th Sunday in Lent. Father’s Day in the UK is the same date in the USA I believe and is not originally a religious festival – it’s always in June.
