Who decided the library should be a memorial?
In 1945, a committee made up of local businessmen and politicians was formed to decide on a war memorial. Along with many local groups, the committee decided that a new library would be built and that it would serve as a memorial as well. The first sod was turned on April 21, 1949. The library opened its doors to the public on November 12, 1951.
