In 1863, President Abraham Lincoln appointed a national day of thanksgiving on the final Thursday in November. President Franklin D. Roosevelt changed the date to the fourth Thursday in November in 1939 (approved by Congress in 1941). Every president since makes a yearly Thanksgiving proclamation.
