Who deals with complaints about interference with mail?
Interference with mail articles is a criminal matter and any evidence of such interference should be reported to the police for criminal investigation. The Australian Postal Corporation Act 1989 prohibits the opening or examination of mail articles except in limited circumstances. Both the Crimes Act 1914 and the Criminal Code Act 1995, which are administered by the Attorney-General, can impose penalties of imprisonment for such offences. The Australian Postal Corporation Act 1989, the Crimes Act 1914 and the Criminal Code Act 1995 are available on the Commonwealth legislation website at www.comlaw.gov.au.
