The first lawn mower was invented in 1830 by Edwin Beard Budding, an engineer from Gloucestershire, England. His reel mower was a set of blades set in a cylinder on two wheels – when you pushed the lawn mower the cylinder rotated and the blades cut the grass. But it wasn’t designed to cut grass – it was for trimming the nap on cloth, which was the main industry in the area at the time.
