Canandaigua Academy was locked down this morning after a 17-year-old senior apparently shot and killed himself in a school bathroom. Canandaigua Police Chief Jonathan Welch said only one person was involved in the shooting, which happened between 9:30 and 10:00. He declined to give any specifics, but said there is no evidence the gunshot was not self-inflicted. School officials locked down the building and called police. Canandaigua City Police, New York State Troopers and the Ontario County Sheriff’s Department searched students as they were released, and later searched the building. Chief Welch said it’s not known how the student brought the gun into the school. He said the investigation will obviously address that issue, and how to make sure it doesn’t happen again. Canandaigua School Superintendent Don Raw said students were moved to the Canandaigua Middle School as they were released, and then bused home. Students at a high school in western New York have been sent home after a student used a gun to commit suicide in a bathroom. Police and emergency crews raced to Canandaigua (kan-ahn-DAY’-gwah) Academy on Tuesday morning. Students were told over the intercom system that they were to remain in classes but were in no danger.
