Who changed the requirements for paraprofessionals?
In 2001 Congress passed a law called “No Child Left Behind” for Title I schools (high poverty schools) and programs. The goal of this law is to raise the standards of teaching and learning in all Title I schools. Paraprofessionals, who were hired before January 8, 2002 and who do not meet the standards, have until January 8, 2006 to meet the new standards. New paraprofessionals in Title I schools or programs must meet the requirements prior to hiring.
