Who Carries Out Risk Assessment?
A nominated person or persons will be responsible for carrying out a risk assessment of their area of work, but employees should be consulted when this exercise is being carried out. How Are the Hazards Identified? It is essential to identify all hazards associated with each department and this can often be made easier by means of a brainstorming exercise. Where there may be several potential hazards to an activity e.g. changing a light bulb, the assessment may be broken down into components e.g. use of ladders, electrical safety. The first question to consider is what is the worst likely outcome if something goes wrong and you must assume that If something CAN go wrong it WILL do! This could be:- • multiple deaths likely • death or serious injury likely • moderate, 3 day RIDDOR accident possible • minor injury possible would not prevent a person from working normally • no risk of injury or disease Next, the likelihood of harm occurring i.e.:- • very likely almost certain that an accid
