Students from the Chugach School District, as well as students from Cordova, Seward, Valdez, Nanwalek, Seldovia and Port Graham participate in YAW. The students range from 8th to 12th grade. Limited space on research vessels and limited funds for transportation allows selection of 25-30 students. Interested students must complete an application and will be selected based on the quality of that application. A teacher from each school site acts as a site coordinator helping the students to gain training and understanding of the research projects. The site coordinators accompany students when they travel. Principal investigators are scientists conducting long term environmental monitoring projects. Each project that the students are involved with has a principal investigator who organizes training for that project.
