Who can be the Narcotic Prescriber?
The PCP or a specialist, such as a pain management specialist or orthopedic specialist, can prescribe controlled substances. If a specialist is assigned as the narcotic prescriber, coordination of medications must occur with the assigned PCP. What is my role as the Narcotic Prescriber The assigned narcotic prescriber is a key player in managing the client’s care and ensuring that the client receives appropriate narcotics for their medical needs. If the client has a separate PCP, it is essential to coordinate and collaborate in the treatment of the client. Educating the client on the appropriate use of narcotics and pain management is a key element in helping the client towards compliance and self-management. The client will be instructed to get narcotic prescriptions from only their assigned narcotic prescriber. The assigned pharmacy will be notified of the client’s narcotic prescriber and encouraged to contact the PCP if the client brings in a narcotic prescription from a non-assigned
