Actually, that came about because I’m so inspired by the Belgian antiques dealer Axel Vervoordt. He is a master at taking old objects and turning them into art. He’ll cut the top off an old table and it will become an amazing fireplace screen. He truly has a gift. An example of that kind of repurposing I love that word is the way we used those old doors. One was made into the master bedroom headboard, and the other one we hung on a wall in the kitchen. The Hartmans just started sticking things up on it right away, like sepia photographs from their trips to Italy. That makes it even more gorgeous, don’t you think? Where did you find those enormous iron light fixtures? They make me think of crumbling castle keeps and wolfhounds dozing by the fire. The ceiling fixtures are mostly antique, and for the most part I found them in Belgium, where they did come out of castles and stately homes. This fine old 1930s house deserved substantial fixtures.
