well it was started by the same French engineer that done the Suez canal but ran out of money and labour was been taken ill with malaria and other diseases so it was abandoned. then the American government decided to build it and used the engineering corp of the US army who had done such things as trying to control the Mississippi river as well. to do the job mainly.

France tried to build in the 1800’s but failed. In the Early 1900’s though, the US built it. It took 100 years.
