Wayne “The Great One” Gretzky was born on January 26, 1961 in Brantford, Ontario, Canada. He learned to play hockey in a backyard rink with his father, Walter. He began his professional career in the World Hockey Association with the Indianapolis Racers in 1978 at age 17. After a trade to the Edmonton Oilers, his National Hockey League career began in 1979 when the Oilers moved from the WHA to the NHL.
