Who attended the Dialogues and how were participants selected?
• Each Dialogue was designed to bring a regional and/or national perspective to the discussion. The Dialogues encouraged a holistic approach and ensured that all participants had an equal opportunity to be heard. It was important that the diversity of Canadian society be reflected in the composition of invited participants. The participation of young people was essential, as was the participation of Aboriginal people. Participants included a diverse cross-section of Canadian society with an interest in children. There was very limited space and demand was high. In general, about 40 people participated in each Dialogue. This helped to ensure that issues were dealt with in an in-depth and meaningful way. The final participant selection was made by government officials, non-governmental representatives and young people based on agreed-upon criteria. • Candidates were put forward principally through comprehensive internal and external networks.
