Who at Argonne actually packages the radioactive waste?
Waste management personnel package the waste. That is a tough job. All waste not packaged by waste management personnel is sorted for lead and liquids plus other materials that radioactive storage sites will not accept. Waste management mechanics use appropriate personal protective equipment when sorting the material. Once chemicals are combined with radioactive waste, the waste is considered mixed waste and the disposal path is different for each container of mixed waste. This makes it difficult to dispose of and is avoided at all costs. What is your role in radiation disaster mitigation, preparedness, response and recovery at Argonne? We mitigate potential contamination incidents (radiation disasters) through careful oversight of scientists and laboratories in which radioactive materials are used (controlled areas). We teach less is more. Less radioactive material and equipment used during experiments will decrease the amount of materials that have to be disposed of as radioactive wa
