Who assesses and grants accreditation?
In recent years, most professions have developed independent agencies to set standards of practice. The Commission on Accreditation of Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA) assesses law enforcement agencies throughout the world. CALEA was formed in 1979 by four major organizations: International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP), National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives (NOBLE), National Sheriffs’ Association (NSA), and Police Executive Research Forum (PERF). CALEA’s 21-member board of commissioners regulates all aspects of the accreditation process. The board comprises eleven members with a law enforcement background and 10 members from the public and private sector.
