Who are the Sephardi Jews?
The Sephardi Jews are people of the Jewish faith who are descended from the former Jewish population of the Iberian Peninsula. In addition to being used to describe people of a particular ethnic background, the term “Sephardi Jews” is also used to describe individuals who practice a particular form of Judaism, whether or not they are descended from Spanish and Portuguese Jews. Sephardi Jews can be found all over the world, with especially large populations in the Middle East and North Africa. The history of Judaism in Spain is ancient, as numerous archaeological finds have suggested, but the Jewish people started settling Spain and Portugal in large numbers around the second century, as Roman influence spread across the Middle East.
