The EPA and the U.S. Coast Guard are the lead Federal response agencies for cleanup actions that are not on Federal lands. The Departments of Agriculture, Commerce, Energy, Defense and Interior have the authority to respond to releases of hazardous substances on lands under the jurisdiction, custody, or control of the respective departments.
