Who are the people in the orange hats and vests we see picking up the litter sometimes?
Community groups and organizations under the “Adopt-A-Highway” program now handle much of the trash collection effort. Under this plan, people volunteer their time and effort to help beautify Nevada’s roadways – saving the taxpayers money while increasing public awareness of the liter problem. The program has been tremendously successful, and it frees up state workers to concentrate on priority matters like highway repair and safety. On other occasions, people in certain workforce programs (such as juvenile offenders) are eligible to reduce fines or sentences by picking up litter or helping out with landscaping work.
