Who are the members of the Committee on Special Education and Committee on Preschool Special Education?
If a child is referred for special education, the parents are automatically members of the committee as it addresses the child’s needs. Committee members work as a team and are responsible for reviewing referrals, arranging for evaluations and recommending programs and services for children with disabilities. Committees must ensure that students’ Indivualized Education Programs enable them to progress as far as possible in the general (regular) curriculum. Parents and teachers provide valuable information to assist the committee in making decisions about a child’s strengths, appropriate programs and services, and placement to meet the child’s unique needs.Note: Some school districts may also have a Subcommittee on Special Education.

Each school district must establish a Committee on Preschool Special Education and a Committee on Special Education, which must include the following: • the parent of the child; • at least one general education teacher of the student; • at least one specia
