Who are the maroons?
Hi, The maroons were slaves who ran away from their masters and hid in the mountains in the Caribbean. They could either have been Africans or descendants from Africans, who were tired of being ill treated by their so called masters. They acted much like a brotherhood, posse, or gang, and formed hovels or underground communities in the mountains. They kept their African roots alive by singing, dancing, telling stories, and by cooking the African way. They would hunt, and fish using weapons they fashioned out of stones, metal, and wood. They were deemed fearless and would not be afraid to attack others in order to survive. Many were afraid of them because it is said, they practiced African black magic and could put a spell on you. Their complexion was usually very dark and their hair very coarse and black. Many Jamaican descendants have maroon blood in them and they are very proud of their heritage.
