Who are the major players in overfishing-on both sides?
A. Overfishing is a large general term and it depends on which fish stock you’re talking about–whether its large migratory tuna that are going across huge oceans where multiple countries are involved or situations where you have local fisheries where the fish are really just hanging around a small local bay or an area off a local community. But it is really an international issue with fishing fleets from multiple countries…you also have several different governments getting together and deciding what the quotas are going to be and have, in the case of blue-fin tuna, repeatedly going against the advice for what sustainable fishing rates would be and decided to continue to overfish. The thing that we have to remember is that we would love to say that the bad guy is the evil big bad fishing industry out there. But ultimately, overfishing is driven by a demand for seafood. Q.
