Who are the main foreign investors of Suriname?
We receive a lot of development aid from the Dutch. In terms of private investors, the bauxite companies invest heavily. At this moment BHPBiliton is investing heavily in the West of Suriname. Also Rosebel Newmont invests in the gold mine sector and Repsol in the oil sector. Up and until now there are no major investors. Many companies are still exploring. There are actually no major American investors but Alcoa. The Caribean is seen as the backyard of the United States, so they should better hurry up. Suriname is a small market of course and it might not be interesting for a company to come here. However, we have great opportunities when it comes to exploring natural resources or producing. Could you expand on the investment opportunities for Americans in Suriname? I would like to see more American involvement in terms of donor development cooperation.
