Who are the key players in Coal River?
Joe Lovett, an environmental lawyer, and Judy Bonds, a grassroots activist, were fighting a David-and-Goliath battle against the whole coal industry, but in particular against Massey Energy and its chairman, Don Blankenship. I started following these three characters, hoping that dramatic things would happen to them and between them. That was a gamble. It might have just been an uneventful three years of reporting. For better or worse, it turned out to be a very dramatic period of time.
