Questions are being asked in London about the tactics adopted by British police to deal with even the most carnivalesque protesters during the Group of 20 summit last week. On Monday, the Guardian reported that police in the City of London had “interviewed a witness who claims to have seen riot police attack a man in the vicinity of last week’s G20 protests, minutes before he collapsed and died of a heart attack.” As The BBC reports, the man who died, a 47-year-old newsagent named Ian Tomlinson, “was not part of the protest,” but was caught up in clashes between police and demonstrators. In addition to what witnesses told police investigating the death, three witnesses told the Guardian they saw Mr. Tomlinson in an encounter with police minutes before his death: All three said they saw him at Royal Exchange Buildings, a pedestrian area 200 feet from where he eventually fell.
